When freshmen come in, they live on theirQuite BrightPolitical Science
When freshmen come in, they live on their own campus, complete with a library, all freshman dorms, some classes, and a cafeteria-style eatery. This ensures that the students get to know each other very well. I have not talked to anyone from another college (some at much smaller schools) that knows as many people as i or anyone does at duke. Everyone is very intelligent, nice, and fun and our school is the epitome of the word "college." Though Duke is known for its academics, we have great athletics (along with basketball, we had teams finishing in the top 5 of D1 this past year in golf, womens and mens lax, field hockey, soccer, tennis, cross country, etc. The social life is also great, good fraternity/sorority scene but there are other social outlets besides this. The school is not a great place if one is outside the norm (weird hair, gay, etc) but if you want an amazing education w/ a great social and athletic life, people who know your name all over campus, and probably the most beautiful quad and chapel ever seen at a college campus, come to Duke!

Question
No dating, just hooking up.Quite BrightPsychology
No dating, just hooking up. I was looking for something a bit more old-fashioned. The harsh stance on alcohol has pushed the parties off campus and into surrounding neighborhoods; freshmen tend to get intoxicated before leaving dorms and the campus has been described as more lackluster than in my days there. (I still live in Durham, btw.)

All freshmen are now housed on East Campus about a mile from West and the rest of the students. This is to encourage class unity and bigger giving to the university later. I considered my freshman year mixed with upperclassmen a big plus and feel the current plan is like extending high school another year.

On a more positive note, my brother and I, my husband and his 2 siblings all attended there and found it an excellent base education for our future endeavors...none of us are working in our fields of major, even though we all also have graduate degrees! The hype about Durham being unsafe is just that. No one should leave his laptop open in a library carols and expect it to be there when he returns. Most campus criminals are oppotunists and students here living in a bubble are easy prey...Durham's crime rates are higher than some surrounding areas but it hasn't made me move yet!

All in all, the sports are great, you can find "Hogwarts" in many areas on campus, readers will fall in love with Perkins Library, the Duke Gardens are beautiful, sometimes it snows (yes, and Durham sometimes doesn't get all roads passable and electricity restored for over a week--but that's Durham and that's another story altogether), and, finally, if you attend Duke, you are allowed to someday wed in Duke Chapel!

Question
I had doubts about coming to Duke, butBrightOther
I had doubts about coming to Duke, but now I couldn't be happier with my choice. People are friendly-- everywhere you go people giving you a smile or asking how you are. A lot of people are involved in Greek life, but it is by no means a necessary part of having fun. (Most) professors are extremely willing to help you. I've had professors who came in on the weekend to hold review sessions before tests and professors who have invited the whole class out to lunch. Undergraduates are not ignored and shoved to the academic sidelines. In fact, they are encouraged to do research with professors and get involved in other aspects of the university. Durham isn't exactly New York or Boston, but I've found that there are so many things to do on campus that it doesn't really matter. Overall, Duke is a forward looking university that can provide you with the opportunity to do just about anything.
