My biggest piece of advice for anyone consideringQuite BrightEnglish
My biggest piece of advice for anyone considering college is to really think about giving yourself room to grow. I began my college career at a small (1500 students), liberal arts school and ended up at the University of Michigan -- a giant school that's built into a city with the largest football stadium in the nation. Not exactly what I started out with. I thought that I'd want a small college, just like my rather small high school, which I loved. I was mistaken. I began as a Microbiology major. I'm graduating with a degree in English. Parents: don't pressure your kids into being something they discover they aren't. And Students: Don't let yourself be unhappy. Work hard, do your best...but ultimately you have to make a choice that will satisfy you.

Question
The University of Michigan can be very overwhelmingQuite BrightIndustrial Operations Engineering
The University of Michigan can be very overwhelming at times. Some classes are so difficult and so competitive that they make for what can be a very discouraging academic experience. But this only speaks to the quality of the University and its academics. If you stay on top of your studies and persevere, you will succeed, and you will also grow as an individual. Also, find an extra-curricular activity (don't worry, there is one for you) that allows you to balance your academics with fun and stress-relief. Oh, and most importantly (especially if you are an engineer), GO TO CLASS!

Question
I ended up in an entirely different field,English
I ended up in an entirely different field, as can often happen to students of English Literature. Although no employer has ever asked me about the classes I took or my grades, I know that just listing my degree from the University of Michigan on my resume has helped me.I wish I had given more thought to what "real world" skills I might need after college. I found that the English department, in particular, seemed far more interested in career ivory tower dwellers than with people entering careers. I think that I should have spent more time in the Career Planning and Placement office that the University provides, rather than relying on my department.
