My professors did not speak english, were rude and forget about stopping by during office hours, they're probably not there anyway. U-M has a reputation of being a creative environment, but try to do something beyond regurgitating lecture notes in the same essay format as everyone else over and over again, you'll flunk.

Question
I stumbled onto this site and was veryQuite BrightOther
I stumbled onto this site and was very disappointed with many of the comments about Michigan. A lot of them only highlighted the down sides of the situations. A perfect example is that someone was complaining about all the construction here; well, that's how they keep the facilities here in excellent condition. Another complaint is that everyone is either an east coast snob or a midwest hillbilly. Simply not true. It's a big school, there are all sorts of people here. You're not going to like all of them, but so what? Don't hang around with them. Because there are so many students you're bound to find a lot of cool kids.

So here's the real deal about Michigan. Academically, I doubt there are any better schools. I chose Michigan because they have top-notch engineering, medical, and business programs. No surprise that I am majoring in biomedical engineering. But what comes with going to such an excellent school is competition and hard work. The great thing about this is that if you can do well here, you can do well anywhere. You also get opportunities at a major research university that you don't get anywhere else. I'm a first year student and I am working on a vascular surgery research project. I've learned to do microsurgery on rats!

Socially: The school is big, but it doesn't feel big. It always amazes me how many people I know when I'm walking around campus. The campus is a great size (at most 15 min walk to anywhere on central campus, north campus is another story). The party scene here is decent, or probably about as good as you'll find at any strong academic school. It's cold here in the winter. Real cold. But you kind of get used to it, you start to really appreciate nice days.In summary, great school, very competitive (not cut-throat, just a bunch of really smart kids), great resources and opportunities, great social atmosphere, cold in the winter, beautiful the rest of the year.
