Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I am a very indecisive person so whenQuite BrightUndecided
I am a very indecisive person so when I made the choice to come to college here it was just because I thought it would satisfy my parents the most. That choice was probably the BIGGEST mistake I have ever made in my life. The one good thing I can say about the school is that it looks good on your resume, other than that I don't know. Let's see,

Academics: the course work is definitely time consuming and challenging and if you plan on getting an A in a class don't plan on having a social life. My history professor literally assigned us 700 pages of reading in one week. Being that over 20 hours of just reading. There has been some points where I have had so much work that I seriously considered dropping out of college (who would've thought since I had a 3.98 gpa in high school)

Teachers: It depends on your depart, 90% of lower level math GSI speak no English, and yes you will get a GSI, not a professor.

Social Life: Well I came from a middle class area and I am unique in that sense, I like to party and am very open to meeting new people. Here, everyone is either really rich and snoody, or really nerdy, so good luck finding friends if you go here. I visited my sister in UCal-Santa Barbara, another highly ranked school, and I was amazed. Everyone seemed so friendly and ready to reach out and be friends, despite of me only being there for a week. In my dorm at umich, it is literally the end of the year and I still don't know half the guys who live in the dorm right next to me, and trust me, I'm not very introverted.

Girls: I am a guy so I can rate the girls but not guys. Anyways, I came from a high school that was probably lower average in attractiveness of girls if that a word. I though going to college would be a step up, actually it was a jump down into a black hole. I can say that I went out with some of the prettiest girls in my high school and here I barely know any girls at all, and the ones who like me are just ugly, needy, fat girls. If your planning on meeting any legit girls this is not the place for you.

Environment: Well if your on North Campus which the throw half the freshman into, be prepared to have no social life at all (unless you join Greek life). I feel like if I took all the nerdiest kids in high school and multiplied them by a thousand than that would be North campus. Another part of the environment, the weather SUCKS. I am from Cleveland, Ohio (only about 45 min south and an hour and a half east) and I have never been through such shitty weather, it is April 23 and there was literally a snow storm 3 days ago. 85% of the year it's not even worth setting foot outside, pretty depressing eh?Conclusion: If you plan on having more fun in college than high school, plan on not being miserable and depressed for four years, plan on meeting average/typical friendly people, this is NOT the place for you. I spent a year here and I am literally taking up my time I should be studying for finals to write this because I feel so bad for the people who are making the choice to go here. I am trying to get out of here as soon as possible. Good luck with your college searches, and I consider reading reviews, both negative and positive before making your decision so you don't have to live through the type of experience which I had to go through.

Question
First off, I am only writing a critiqueBrightArt & Design Department
First off, I am only writing a critique about the school of Art & Design, from my experience the rest of the university is GREAT. If you wish to pursue a dual degree, with art then the University is worth your time.

The art program however requires a few more years before it becomes worth the time and money it demands. The core curriculum requires you to take foundational courses, however the courses remain VERY vague in what they seek you to do. Once you complete these courses the course guide is pretty much take classes that interest you. No general direction or concentration is offered at this school. If you want to be a graphic designer, you should hope you get into one of the only 3 graphic design classes offered. By the time you finish school you'll pretty much know of every teacher, there's only about 20 who each teach around two courses per semester.I have been here for 1.5 semesters and I know MORE than 20 students who have transferred out of the art program into either LSA or another institution. I know I am sounding critical and harsh, but by the end of the third semester you will see many students who are tired of being in the program. I am adding myself to that number as I find my out of state tuition could be used towards an actual art school as I wish to pursue a career in art, more than I want to pursue a degree at Michigan.
