I chose to come to Bates for sports.Bright
I chose to come to Bates for sports. I care deeply about my sport and figured it would be enough to like the school. After being here I realize it is not the place for me. Too small and not many ways to be social and get off campus. The city of Lewiston is not nice and I would not recommend walking alone. If you truly want a small high school feel then bates is perfect for you however if you want a spirited busy campus and bigger social scene I would recommend looking elsewhere. Do not base your college decision on whether or not you were recruited. As of now I plan on transferring.

While Bates College is a great school, there'sQuite BrightUndecided
While Bates College is a great school, there's one thing that all applicants should know -- this college is very small and the surrounding city is not great at all. I'm from NYC and to come to Lewiston, ME was horrible for the first semester. No car and no where to go = bored out of my mind. But after making a few friends who were impulsive and had cars, it was much better. We would go out on midnight runs and everything, but most people on campus prefer to stay on campus. I don't -- it's pretty but there's not much to do...

Also, if you're shy, it'll be hard to assimilate at first, but you'll find your niche and fit in. Once that happens, it's a wonderful experience. Just make sure to keep opportunities open and to have fun. I met my friends at parties and just through other people; I can't imagine college without them anymore. Regarding academics, I came from a rigorous high school curriculum, so the work is not very hard for me; I even have time to be alone and have fun an hour or so a day. Again, it all depends on your major.
