UMass is a great school.BrightCommunications
UMass is a great school. It can seem unbelievably massive at first, but give it some time and you'll find your place. Compared to friends who are spending close to $50,000 a year for their ivy league schools, I am both satisfied as well as confident that UMass is a great value. I encourage anyone looking at schools in New England to visit UMass... you will be pleasantly surprised!

Question
UMass is an excellent school, but the CommsAverageCommunications
UMass is an excellent school, but the Comms program is highly theorized. To balance that the University has a tremendous amount of extra-curricular activities so you can get practical experience.

Excellent social life...show a bit of restraint when you know you need to be a big boy or girl and you will be fine!

This was my last choice for schools and I had to go because it was all I could afford. I planned on transferring after a year or 2, but never looked back. I had an awesome experience and could still be in my major field (I am...very part time) but $$ was not getting to where I needed it.

FYI...UMass has an excellent reputation when you are applying for jobs and it is a good ice breaker if you have a UMass alum (there are many) across the desk as the person who could potentially hire you.GO HERE and don't regret it...just keep active.

Question
UMass Amherst is a real mixed bag.Quite BrightUndecided
UMass Amherst is a real mixed bag. The campus is very ugly and the buildings are not maintained. The surrounding area is beautiful. However you WILL get bored. Once you turn 21 the bar scene is great. You can bring a car and I highly reccomend it, as you are likely to feel trapped and bored if you stay on campus frequently. Parking is a huge hassle. I transferred after 3 sememsters and one major warning I can give people is that the classes at UMass tend to be very challenging compared to the schools with which it competes. You may find yourself having to go to classes and extra discussions 5 days a week and having to do lots of homework. Meanwhile your friends at other schools won't have as much homework and will at least have Fridays off. The general student population is fairly birght and motivated, however frequently obnoxious. Overall I am happy that I left UMass, the negatives just outweigh the positives. With tuition continuing to increase the school just isn't a deal. Since for that lower state tuition you will be living in the middle of nowhere, feeling trapped with seemingly unnecessary amounts of schoolwork. General intro classes are huge, made up of hundreds of students. However the environment of the school can be fun, and you are attending a well known University, the overall education is just mediocre at best. Think twice before coming here or go for a year and transfer.
