I wasted two years of my life here.Communications
I wasted two years of my life here. i lived in southwest the first year everyone was arrogant obnoxious so I went to orchard hill the second yr. everyone was that same except a lot more quiet. I felt like I was the only one living in the dorm. Classes are all mostly theoretical and humungous. All of campus is liberal, professors stress their political views on you. Weekends can be very repetitive. I dont know how most of the kids I saw got into the school after they cheated their way through every class and seemed so dumb to me. i was miserable most of the time because I tried to get to know people and I got rejected most of the time. New Englanders are obnoxious and cruel for the most part. I would never in a million years go back to this university. Thank god I transferred out.

Question
I went to UMASS Amherst reluctantly - becauseHistory/Histories (art history/etc.)
I went to UMASS Amherst reluctantly - because it was the only school we could afford ( I was the 6th of 8 kids and 3 others were in college at the same time as me).

That said - I really did like me time at UMASS and found the professors to be excellent - in most classes. I participated in the 5-college system (do that still have that?) and was convinced that UMASS profs were unequivocally better than Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Hampshire. (I had a good prof at Smith!)

Originally I was put off by the "party school" reputation - but I quickly realized that there was no way to stay at that school if you were partying all the time.

I participated on the women's track and Cross Country teams - which was extremely high caliber at the time.

UMASS also gave me the opportunity to try out so many things I might not have had a chance to do at other schools - like sky diving and journalism. All in all - I was happy I went there.

Question
Keep in mind, I was there in theQuite BrightEngineering Department
Keep in mind, I was there in the late 1960's: The place was too big, classes were large, professors busy (didn't get to know any professors), students weren't as bright as I had been accustomed to at my high school. A big party school. While there were many exceptions, on average, the students were not there to learn, but to play. I lived in Southwest and would not recommend it -- a concrete city including four high rises of partying, loud, dumb kids. I hear Orchard Hill is better -- smaller, less noise, more like a normal college.
