If you transfer here, be sure that youQuite BrightEconomics
If you transfer here, be sure that you know the ropes because it can become very difficult being that the university doesn't tell you where anything is at and your expected to know everything. They should put a little more effort in making sure that their transfers have a smoothe semester. Before I arrived at UMass, I believed that there would be a great deal of diversity but I was wrong. THis school has 20,000 students and around 70 percent are caucasian. Usually, this isin't a problem but I've noticed that the majority of them all seem to act or even look the same. It's strange. They have some cold students at this school, and this applies to both the weather and the hearts of the students. The academics are pretty good, I don't complain. This place can look quite big when you first visit but once you get the hang of where everything is at, there shouldn't be a problem. Some of the kids here seem a bit close minded if you ask me. This place is also kind of boring but hey, you have to do what you have to do for that degree at the end of your 4 years. New England has some very strange people. I plan on studying abroad for a semester somewhere just to take a break from this place. There are plenty of things to do on campus but half the time it's so cold and snowy up here that people just want to get in and get out. Some of the dorms are really old school so expect to walk up 3 flights of stairs just to relax in your dorm room.

Question
Umass amherst is what you make of it.Super BrilliantPreMed and Medical
Umass amherst is what you make of it. There is literally every kind of person here from jocks to extreme "nerds". I didnt really expect to come here I could have gone to much more "better" schools but from the price, talking to my friends who go to private schools, the amount of research I did, and the amount I have already learned. I know that my choice of this undergraduate, especially the science program, will not hinder me when I am finding a job. The classes, apart from lectures, are usually pretty small and so far, I have only gotten teachers who are genuinely interested in my education. It does have a reputation for being a party school but from what I have gathered it is really not more than any other big school. Indeed, there are places on campus (southwest) which party more and other areas (Orchard hill) where I have lived and it is extremely quiet. You can do whatever you want on a Friday night from finding people to drink with to studying with more people. From reading what other people have written on this site the people who didn't like it were people who seem fixed on the fact that this is a huge "party school" and weren't very open. If you come into Umass amherst with a positive outlook I guarantee you will get an awesome education and have some of the best times of your life.

Question
I'm currently a freshmen and all I haveBrightAnthropology
I'm currently a freshmen and all I have to say that this University is basically what you make it. Listen theres 25000 students in a big campus. For the people who complained that its to big, well you should have went to a liberal arts college. If you have the mentality that hey I'm a small fish in the ocean, but I have the resources to come out on top then you should go to Umass. I mean for a state university it hasall the essential things you need. If you want to hang with smart kids you can go hang out with kids in the honor college. If you want to hang with party people you can do that to. There are places in Umass where you can go and do great, and there are places where you can go and end up dropping out. It all depends on the individual. People in this univeristy who complain about it just don't simply try harder enough. For example yes there are crappy frat parties, and bad students. But for me I just get away. I made friends with people who live all over campus who i can chill with without going to any crappy frat parties, and I have cousins at hampshire college who I can hang with. If you look hard and work hard it shouldn't take you more than a semester to do well, and have a great experience at Umass.
