Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I love this school.AveragePsychology
I love this school. Don't get me wrong, it was not my first choice. When I hear Umass, it comes with a lot of negative connotations, such as excessive partying. A lot of you will think that people who write on these websites are either trying to get kids to come here for their own gain (such as the university putting up fake good comments) or students who hate it here so much they just want to post it on the internet. I am neither of these. I am just a freshman who has thoroughly enjoyed my time here thus far. I have lots of friends and I love a lot of my classes. Sure, there are classes you have to take, gen eds, and a lot of them are a waste of time, but these professors usually know they are a gen ed, and treat it as such. I took a sociology class to fulfill a requirement, and I loved it so much, I'm taking another class this semester and I really find it interesting, so much so that I think I will make it my minor. Umass can give you a lot of opportunities, college is only as good as you make it. If you choose to only go to class sometimes and only sometimes do your homework, then you will not be taking full advantage. There are so many things to get involved in such as sports, clubs, and greek life, and I'm sure there are other things to do. You can go down to the Rec Center and shoot pool or go to the craft center and make a wallet (my friend did that once). Umass is a great school, especially since it's surrounded by such a nice town and four other great colleges. I feel like I'm rambling now, but I just wanted to let everyone know why I love it here so much. I feel like Umass gets a "zoo" connotation, and don't get me wrong, I party and know a lot of people who do, but it's not a zoo where everyone is getting hurt and there is vomit everywhere, and you can't sleep due to the noise. If a big school is not for you, or you want to go to school in the city, that's great. Go wherever you feel most comfortable. But don't just reject Umass because of it's somewhat questionable reputation.

This is a very big school and it's easy to get lost if you don't try to set your own path. Have some kind of plan before starting at UMass. Research all the programs you're interested in, and then some. Please be aware that just because you were accepted into the school does not mean that you will be able to study what you want. Some programs require additional applications, such as the business school, journalism, studio art, etc.

Transfer students, at least in my experience, are not given much of an orientation or assistance. You really have to work extra hard to get to know the ins and outs of the school. The biggest thing to remember about attending UMass Amherst is to be proactive. It is so easy to just go through the motions here and have no involvement in the UMass community. Believe it or not, you really can be invisible here. So, get involved and be your own advocate.

UMass is a fabulous institution that has unbelievable extra curricula activities. No one here "attacked" UNH. I graded UMass as I have the right to do. I would not touch another schools score since I have no first hand knowledge of that school. Someone else is knocking UNH. Maybe you have an unhappy student in your midst. Please be adult and only rate your own school.
