Question
The Philosophy department at UF is surprisingly superiorPhilosophy
The Philosophy department at UF is surprisingly superior to what you would think a sports-obsessed public school would manage to have. This is for two reasons: UF managed to pull together a fantastic faculty and two, UF as a whole pulls the brightest students in Florida who could have gone to better schools but choose to go to UF b/c "it's free", and usually philosophy students are smart anyway (I promise I'm not biased). Thus, the phil department is great in my opinion b/c the professors are brilliant or at least nuts enough to make it interesting, and the students provide for good debate and like-minded colleagues. You probably won't find the average UF student here (Greek, materialistic, flaky) which is a nice change. You can absolutely get a quality education at UF, you just need to find the right crowd of people, latch onto the good professors, and watch yourself rise above the rest (the rest being in a beer-induced coma).

Question
There are some really brilliant professors here atQuite BrightEconomics
There are some really brilliant professors here at UF. For every majors. The thing about them is you have to find out who they are and put a lot of time into them to get something out.

The campus is nice and Gainesville is nice. An hour to the beach, lots of bars, multiple live music venues, lake walburg close by, ginnie springs and college sports. I rated Extra Curricular activites at A+ because they really are. Tons of clubs, groups, every intramural sport league you'd ever want, lots of free speech activites, church clubs, frats and sororites AND, the SG puts on 4 or 5 free events for students each semester. Ex. they've paid.... Kanye West, DMB, Snoop Dogg,Flaming Lips, Pepper, Less Than Jake, The Roots. AND ton of speakers...Jon Kerry, Bill Nye, Michael Moore, The Guys from MythBusters. They all came here ON campus.

Obviously if you like college sports this is a great place.
A NEGATIVE : This school is big. Therefore the culture here is also big. That means, people tend to act like sheep, not a lot of individuality(there is some however and most who are individual find in it being eccentrically individualistic). Also, good mid level indie bands rarely ever stop here. Frats and sororities dominate at this school. Literally. They run SG almost every year, their culture takes over most bars and clubs and they are as a majority pretty socially exclusive. If your not like that, then you've got to do some work outside of class to meet people you relate to.

I personally would have gone to a smaller artsy school like Flagler if I could do it again. Thats is cause i'm a musician tho...Engineering, business, journalist, pre-med, pre-law and science majors should strongly consider going to this school though. A lot of professors here are excellent.
