I love Arcata.Quite BrightOther
I love Arcata. I really do. The forest is really great, and I've met some really interesting people. I've changed a lot in my one year there, and managed to avoid the potheads, for the most part. I love my department (Theatre, Film, and Dance), and LOVE the hands on experience that I get as a film major. They do a good job promoting social justice issues within residence life, which is nice to see. However, on the flip side, I've met a lot of students who are not academically motivated, and most of the classes that I've taken have been pretty easy, though I have taken some rewarding classes that have taught me a lot. I love the school, but I may have to transfer. (Though I would miss the trees)

Question
At Humboldt, I was Wildlife major.Biology
At Humboldt, I was Wildlife major. The wildlife Department is one of the best in the country. I specifically went to Humboldt for the Wildlife Program and I was not disappointed. I can't speak for other programs- but wildlife is a tough, top rated program. Prepare to work hard to do well in this department!

I found that as I applied for wildlife positions I was always on the top of the application piles because of my wildlife degree and experience.

I am currently finishing my Masters in Natural Resources and applying to PhD programs and I work for a Natural Resource Agency as a Wildlife Biologist.

The area is gorgeous-if you love to be outdoors (forest, oceans, mountains)-then you will love the setting of the university. There is not much of a city life-but I liked the slower pace of Arcata.

However, there are potheads everywhere-it is an unfortunate fact. If you go there, you will have to just get used it. I must confess that I did vote for legalizing Marijuana a few years back-but after attending Humboldt I do not think I would vote for that law again.

There was also a major lack of diversity on the campus. Any one of color will stand out. Unfortunately, I did have some negative experiences in this regard. It took me 2 years of getting used to being one of the few people of color on the campus. It was at times very difficult to live in Humboldt County. I often thought about leaving because of this. However, I really loved the Wildlife Dept! Once I started to get involved with the ethnic and diversity programs/centers, it made the Humboldt transition easier.

I still go up to Arcata, visit friends, and find myself thinking fondly of the last 3 years of my time at Humboldt State.

If you want to go into Wildlife, Natural Resource or a Science discipline, I would really recommend this school. If you come from a minority background, I would suggest getting involved with different groups to help you with the transition to Humboldt State.

Question
Everything I was told about this university provedNot so brightArt & Design Department
Everything I was told about this university proved itsself to be the exact opposite.
Only two teachers I found to be cool or supportive of creativity in art students. Everywhere I went, on campus and off I would get harassed and even in class (the other student made a death threat and the school did nothing whatsoever).

What makes this school terrible though is how underfunded and lousy every department is. They slash budgets, eliminate programs but still find the money to repave with cobble stone and put in with offensive mission style signs for the school. The prioties of the administration are skewed and students are last on that list.

The Teachers are generally rude, lazy/sloppy and apathetic while their departments are completed unorganized and you'll find yourself endlessly frustrated by how each of your teachers from the same department will contradict eachother when you try to introduce ideas from one to the next. IT seems they are either fighting each other or just haven't had any discussions for any sort of cohesion between eachother's classes whatsoever.

They are supposed to be progressive but their student store uses sweatshop produced materials and their cafeteria serves deep-fried greasy garbage that will put pounds on you and is anything but healthy.

The Humboldt county environment is supposed to be openminded, friendly, easygoing, but in reality the people espouse the attitude of p.c. thugs, or liberal fascists, they are far too extreme. The locals hate everyone who isn't "one of them" and will rob you blind \i've never been ripped off more times in my entire life than living there in one year). This school will not prepare you for life outside of HUmboldt county and everyone i've known who has graduated does not have a success story. It's best to go to the only community college there or find any other cal state to attend. Unless you are a braindead hick and/or stoner you don't belong here.
