Positive Negative Neutral Advice
UAB is still trying to make the transitionAverageEducation
UAB is still trying to make the transition from being a purely commuter school to a more "residential" type of campus.

This is a no-kidding urban campus in a busy section of Birmingham, AL. This is good, in that there are clubs, restaurants, etc very conveniently located.... yet not so great in that most female students do not feel completely safe, especially at night

I have had some really good teachers in the School of Educ., but have not been as happy with instructors in other areas of study.Another thing to consider is that the university is attached to one of the leading research hospitals on the planet... this is great for those going into the medical field, but the academic side of the place seems to get lost in the shuffle when it comes to prestige, reputation, funding, etc..... All in all, I feel that I am getting a good education, but am missing out on the overall traditional college life that the UA campus at Tuscaloosa offers, as well as Auburn and some of the other old line southern universities.

Question
Unless you are pursuing a career in theAverageUndecided
Unless you are pursuing a career in the field of medicine, this school is not for you. The administrative offices are terrible. To some extent this is to be expected, however getting hung up on and yelled out for asking simple questions is ridiculous. The school cares more about the money your sending rather than your education. The buildings are falling apart and heating and air conditioning rarely work. In saying this, UAB does have a great medical and nursing school so it would definitely be a good school for you if that is your intended major.

Question
UAB is great in some areas of academics,BrightEducation
UAB is great in some areas of academics, including medical, engineering, and math. However, if you commute and live like more than 20 minutes from the school, it is extremely hard to get invoved. The student life is very limited and the sports program is terrible. The Socalist newspaper is also horrible. If you want to just focus on academics and nothing else then UAB might be a good place, but if want a student life and want to get involved, then go somewhere else.
